Possible upgrade help - Jedi - 2014-08-05 23:45

Hello all.
Recently i got a pc off a friend (which he'll get paid for). And ive noticed it has some things i might want to transfer to my current gaming rig.
My Current Rig is:
Windows 7 Ultimate
2TB HDD
XFX Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Card 1GB
4 GB Ram
Intel Core? i7 Quad Processor i7-860
Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1333MHz 4GB
MSI P55-CD53, P55, Socket-1156, DDR3 Motherboard
Silver Power SP-SS500 500W PSU

The new pc has some stuff i want to put on my current rig:
SAPPHIRE GRA PCX R9 280X 3GB Graphics Card x 2 linked
KINGSTON HyperX 8GB RAMKit 2x4GB DDR3

Here is a comparison of my old vs new graphics card:

So i am posting here to make sure i can do this and if so any suggestions.

Also on the new pc there is:

It also has a 160GB harddrive thats not worth linking .

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Jedi

Not sure if that cpu is any faster, but the first thing I would buy is a SSD.

I will get a SSD eventually but i posted this to see if the 2 things i wanted to transfer to my current rig will fit. Not planning to transfer more than the Graphics card and RAM IF it will fit.

''x 2 linked''

Do you mean there's two?

Anyway, if it's only one you could just switch it with your old one. The only thing you wanna keep in mind is your PSU, if it's a bad quality one 500W might not be enough, if it's good quality then it should be safe. I don't know your PSU so can't say anything about it.

CPU is not better so don't even bother.

Edit: Just saw the Corsair 750W, nvm Biggrin

Yeah, 2 graphics cards linked in Crossfire as my friend said, not had anything like this before.

Haha, the number on the electricity bill may be a premiere then too Smile

Use the 750W PSU, it's way better quality than the 500W.

You can only use 1 GPU on your (Intel) motherboard. It doesn't have the right slots for a 2nd one.

The new motherboard is a much, much better spec (and of course supports 2 GPUs), but the CPU is quite a bit weaker than the i7.
Unfortunately, the new motherboard is designed for APUs, which aren't intended to be nearly as powerful as modern high-end CPUs. That means that the best CPU currently available for that motherboard is not much faster (~10%) than your i7.

So if i move over the 750W PSU, 1 of the Graphics cards and the RAM sticks for now as i got no money to buy new motherboard atm would that work?

Thought id ask here first before i start poking around inside my pcs Smile

Should work fine

Edit:

If you do buy a new motherboard in future, you'll almost certainly need a new CPU as well

Thanks Elmo.
Will do a switchover this weekend.
And yeah if i do get a new one in future i will also get new CPU Smile

Well ive decided to wait with transferring until my friend can come over, didnt want to take the chance in doing something wrong.
Hopefully soon Smile
