Hi,
I have this pc, http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dimc521/en/SM_EN/specs.htm
I know its a dell thats why its carp. I want more ram in it. 4gb it has 4 slots for 1gb cards. I have win7 on it. What ram do i need? I know how to install it.

it depends on how much RAM the motherboard can support, and reading from that page, 4 GB is the maximum it allows.

How much, at what frequency is in it at the moment? You just want to add 1GB modules of the same to fill the slots (assuming its using 1GB modules currently)

You need to check what your motherboard allows i.e DDR2 DDR3 and How much its maximum RAM amount is.
Step 1. So firstly you should download CPU-Z: CPU-Z Download.
Step 2. After you have installed CPU-Z Run it. Click the Mainboard tab.

Step 2. When in the Mainboard tab, look for the Manufacturer & Model. You will need these.

Step 3. Now head over to Google and type in the manufacturer and model number into Google. (Most likely it will be the top link, if not look though some others.)

When you get to your Manufacturer page, look for a tab that says "Specifications" When you find that it will show you what ram type it takes and the maximum RAM.
Always make sure you have the right type of mainboard when using Google, sometimes it will take you to another mainboard model! Always check!!

The documentation says you can install up to 4GB's of RAM. The type of ram you can install is DDR2 SRAM.

If you're looking for gaming performance I would recommend replacing that graphics card with something better, since the processor on your machine in terms of LFS is decent.

If you do get a video card, you'll have to swap out that crappy 280w power supply as well. Most r supplies in prebuilts are made to provide just enough power to run everything, (but sometimes they don't even provide 'enough').

Actually scrap that video card idea, it's one of those flat(ish) cases, so only low profile video cards unless you don't mind having the side cover off permanently. As well as fitting a standard atx power supply somewhere in there..

Oh.. I didn't consider the size of the case.. You might be able to buy another case for it.. but by the time you've bought a new case.. you'll need a new mobo, new ram, new graphics, new power supply.. Would be cheaper to just buy a whole new system lol.

I can't afford a new pc, its 2 512mb slots in atm, i can get 4 1gb in it i just need what pc it is... I might upgrade a graphics card though!

If you look in your BIOS (hit F2 before windows boots iirc - it'll tell you on the POST screen anyway) it'll tell you exactly what speed your current RAM is running at. Replacement RAM will need to be the same speed or faster.

Note: Do you have 32bit or 64bit Win7?
If 32bit, there's not much point in getting 4GB as only 3-3.5GB will be usable (usually 3GB on Dells). You may as well save a little money and buy 2x1GB sticks to bring your total to 3GB. 32bit doesn't use as much RAM as 64bit anyway.

It's 32bit. Thinking of selling this one on the bay for 70ish and building my own pc.

You need a PSU.

The graphics card is weaker than the rest of the system.

I like the look of the motherboard. + You need a hard drive as well.. You defiantly want to look at a new graphics card. Having that kind of cpu + ram then a weak gpu wont help much.

spend as much as you can on gpu first, second cpu, thats where your fps will come from. most recent quads will be more than enough for what you want to do. GPU is where you don't want to skimp on, you'll get more fps (frames-per-second) and more enjoyable gameplay.

That depends on the game. LFS, for example, is more CPU intensive.

What is more, GPU will generally only improve game performance, while CPU will improve all performance.

GPU is also easier to upgrade later.
