Questions about the VW 2.0TDI Engine - Sam - 2016-05-15 04:00

Hello,

Recently I was looking into buying a 2006 VW Passat with the 2.0TDI 170ps version engine, but I've read a lot about people having problems with the 2.0 but it is apparently only with a specific version? Would anyone be able to clear up the confusion on which is the one to go for and which is the one to avoid. I know in 2008 they changed to common rail. But apart from that I don't know my VW engines.

Thanks!

Afaik the 2004-2006 versions are the most prone to failure. Mainly top end stuff along with fueling issues.

The 2009-on versions should be fine. However dont trust everything on the internet. My dads Octavia 2.0 tdi from 2007 currently has 408.000 kms (253.000 mi) on it and still runs fine. His is the 140hp though, but I don't think that makes a difference when it comes to the problems they're so infamous for.

The 2.0TDi engine which was horrendous, were the engines that went in the B5 Platform. Specifically the 2.0 TDi BKD (BKD is the Engine Code) The 2006 Passat shouldn't have a problem.

Generally aslong as VW Engines are maintained well, they will last a long time (Especially the 1.9TDi AWX).

I suppose you were from UK, right? If so, I suppose suggesting a different car won't be very helpful.

I wasn't? I was just confirming his queries about dodgy engines.
