Upload Sites for use with "Forum Reports" - ChrisM - 2012-04-07 14:42

Not sure where to put this thread, but, I keep up with most, if not all user reports on the forum because i clearly have nothing better to doLaugh, and I've noticed in quite a few reports, there's usually problems with files uploaded to different sites.

My suggestion, is to create a stickied thread in the "User's Reporting" area, listing multiple hosting sites, that you admin's find reliable/safe/clean to download replays from. I know there's hundred of upload sites, but surely a list of the "Top 10 recommended" or so would make dealing with the reports a bit more efficient and easier for you guys.

Technically not a "Server" or "Insim" suggestionWink

http://www.localhostr.com should definitely be in the top ten list, if a top ten list were to be shown.

It's safe, quick and easy to use and I'd strongly recommend it to anyone.

http://www.mediafire.com/ Is my personal favorite but it has changed a lot recently

I've always used localhostr since I did a few of boypower's user reports, always a fast download speed and simple to use.

Dropbox owns this tbh. So long as you set the download/upload speed limits to unlimited it'll upload quickly and give you a URL for the file without even starting firefox/ie e.t.c.

Just drag the .mpr into the public folder, right click, copy public link, paste in thread, wait until upload complete (if it isn't already) and click post thread. Done.

And the download speed isn't bad either.

Use a referral link (like mine:http://db.tt/ZScANzJ) and you get an extra 500mb of space.

I'm aware of the differences of the servers. On the carcame forum there is a public database to collect a replay. Every race that is been driven is placed there and everybody can download it or give a downloadlink wich can be placed in the report.

Maybe its possible to cut the replays in pieces and placed in a database on the website. For a example I give a link to the S2 database so you might get the picture

replay database

That works there because they have races. TC is really one continuous race, so there's no start and finish points for a replay.

I'm aware of that, must be possible to cut that in smaller MPR's.

A few issues:

The replay specs aren't fully available, so reliably cutting them requires a lot of reverse engineering.

You can only cut a replay once it's complete. There are various things that you need to know to put in the header that you won't know until the replay's finished.

Disk space. My personal autosaved replays can easily go over 1-2GB per month when I'm reasonably active on the servers. I'm far from online 24/7, so the disk usage for 2 active servers would be huge.
