it's often used in german as an example to how we always think of a male, before we think of a female, especially in highly qualified jobs. Since the english "the doctor" doesn't say anything about the gender, but in german we'd say "der Arzt"(m) or "die Ärztin"(f)

How is that even a riddle. I guess it makes a big mental difference that my native language doesn't differentiate he/she and Finland in general is a pretty gender neutral place (compared to many others.)

That's exactly when that riddle came up lol. In my German I class. She used it on one of the first days in class to explain how German words can be either male/female/neutral. It's not a hard riddle at all but it's amazing how you assume things.
