Name a movie for me

Hey guys, i'm trying to remember the name of a particular movie.. It's about robot's that are invading earth and abducting humans.. in the begining there's some guy who reassures that lightining never strikes twice in the same place and then it does, and then there's the earthquake with the ground splitting apart and these huge metallic robots with big blue-ish lights going around sucking everyone up etc..

It's based on a novel, and there's an old film and a new-ish one.. damn it's on the tip of my tongue xD


This must ring a bell to someone I really need to know the name of the film because I want to shop a scene out of it that i remember
