RJ, in France, "those" things are limited to 45kph (a bit more than 30mph).

In the UK they are 50cc, as Yukine said they do about 30-35 and you can ride them from the age of 16.

But that's also illegal in Finland at least, if your moped goes over 65kph they'll take your licenseplate and your license. Under 65kph, but still over 55kph they'll only take your plates. When you turn 16 you get the license for a 125cc 11kw or under bikes.

Here in Quebec you can get a 49cc moped starting at age 14. Anything over is considered illegal until you can get the 125cc license. After that, it's the regular "motorcycle" license.

As for the 49cc class, most guys/girls will try to upgrade to 70cc class with a bored engine. Some will even try to fit a Yamaha 125/150 into a regular BW's.

In Finland the police are rather strict about the moped 45kph speed limit and aftermarket parts... They regularly test drive local kids mopeds against their speed camera to see if they are legal or not. Especially if they look modified at all or have been seen speeding by.

It's lucky that they're not quite so anal about testing modified cars... The license plate & driving license stacks at the office would get really big really soon.
