At the end of the day, it's his Volvo to enjoy and if clear lights, tinted or otherwise, make him happy then who are you to tell him he's wrong? Jimmy enjoys working on his car, and you're taking a gigantic dump all over his passion. It can be very discouraging to post something you're proud of and have a community tear you to shreds over it; I'm sure you wouldn't like it if we all laid into your Subaru. This is the age-long question on all car forums and different ones take a different stance. Is criticism allowed and to what extent? My opinion is that criticism and opinions are necessary if you do this kind of public showcase. It's stupid if people just post their stuff online to gain praise and approval for the sake of their ego, and others can either give thumbs up or stay silent. That's like a restaurant where they make bad food, because only the people who liked it give feedback and the others just leave and never come back. The quality of the food never improves because the owner thinks his food is great based on the feedback. As a car enthusiast who occasionally likes to show off his work, I think one has a few options depending on what they actually want to achieve: 1. Opt for the route of maximum cred and ego boost, and build only based on the positive feedback. If the positive feedback is really the thing you're looking for instead of a personalized ride. 2. Follow your own taste, disregard negative comments. This is great if you want to keep your own ways but still show your work to people who might be interested. There's no need to get butthurt because you can never please everyone. 3. Do design choices based on your own ideas, but use feedback to think over them. If nobody seems to like design idea X, then could it be improved, or do I still think it's perfect the way it is? I wouldn't want a bunch of yes men around me when I'm asking for opinions (and posting pictures of your project is really just that.) Jimmy's ideas for new wheels that I've seen were pretty sweet, and the exhaust job is pretty good now. I just don't like clear tail lights. |
