managed to pop the tailgate open, and the actuator is indeed bad. at least I can open the tailgate manually now.

Because my trunk is rusted and FUBAR I had to make a DIY plateholder to hide the rust beneath and keep my license plate from falling on the road. Until yesterday it was held on by a bit of steel wire.
I've also decided to save your eyes and crop the rest of the trunk away because it's hideous.

So yesterday I did a bunch of really bad and quick fixes to the general trunk area, I'm not bothering with it any more than this. Filled the worst rust holes with some older-than-Jesus chemical metal (ran out of that before finishing as well) and threw some paint on it in the cold&dark (as you should???)
