I said I'd never buy a ThinkPad brand new because they were stupidly expensive. But then I saw this on offer and I could not resist.

[Image: lenovo-laptop-thinkpad-e480-14-hero.png?...NzQ1NmE4Yw]

Specs:

Lenovo ThinkPad E480

CPU - Intel Core i7 8550U
RAM - 8GB
GPU - Radeon RX 550 2GB
OS - Windows 10 Pro
SSD - 256GB
Will be transferring my HDD from my current T420 over to this.

RE: Something New You've Got... - Cola - 2018-10-24 19:25

It would be a shame to switch from SSD to Hard drive. Also the reason they are cheap is because they arent really Thinkpads. The E-series are pretty much same quality as any other consumer laptop. Be aware about heat. E480 and E580 have been measured to get very warm on the bottom.
Otherwise congratulations with your new laptop Smile

RE: Something New You've Got... - Owl - 2018-10-24 19:38

The SSD is an M.2 drive, there's a bay for a hard drive which isn't used if you bought an SSD variant. I got the E series becaude i couldnt justify paying £300 more for a T480 which had the same specs, with a bit more I/O. I've ran some pretty hefty automation programs and it did get a bit warm, but nowhere near the 88°C that my T420 fets up to Laugh Thank you anyway ☺️

Fair enough, worried you were gonna slab a harddrive in it lol Tongue

My mate just bought one like it, and he's happy with it so far.
The reason I was worried about the temperature can be seen in this review: https://www.notebookcheck.net/ThinkPad-E480-i5-8250U-RX-550-Laptop-Review.280524.0.html

They measured like 70-80ºC on the underside of the laptop, not just the CPU, but the entire casing of the laptop! But it seems a BIOS update has fixed it on later models.

Treated myself to a new phone, the Oneplus 6T in Midnight Black, the one with 8GB of ram. Loving it so far Smile

Noise-cancelling is a real gift when you travel by train daily.

After many months I'm done with buying the parts for my new PC. Missing from the picture is the case and a 2TB HDD. Also I'm gonna replace the cooler with an AIO.

Rice, rice, baby... *bassline* Rice, rice, baby... Rolleyes

Aerodynamics carbon fiber bonnet. The little white spot is actually a piece of masking tape, not a scratch.

I'll post another picture in Show us your ride once it's installed.

No B-series here, but I'm in the process of building a D16Y7/Z6 hybrid turbo engine for it. I was going to order the pistons and rods but I got this instead because it came up for sale...

RE: Something New You've Got... - Brendon - 2018-11-19 19:49

Oh okay, I heard the D16 are "quick" (which is relative of course) too... Would be an interesting build, I was always thinking of getting one of these Civics as first car and beating it, but for my budget there were only 1.4is and 1.6s with max. 101 hp or the TD variant of the MB Civic (looks like the rover) but pls Civic and diesel just don't fit. So at the end I didnt get a Honda Sad

Anyways, take care of it, these are lovely. Smile

Treated myself with the 6GB ram variant of the Oneplus 6T. I don't think I'll ever get used to this phone

Sure, I just managed to source the bits I need for the rear disc swap tonight from a car that is going to be dismantled, they should come my way within a few weeks.
