Not really. These things tend to come in phases (usually related to combinations of tectonic/volcanic/solar activity). The world has a long history of fairly frequent, major (for us, but not in the grand scheme of things) disasters. Many didn't leave much of a lasting trace, many were in a far away, unknown land or just too long ago to remember. Humans have only been around a few thousand years out of ~4.5billion.

Not really a chance, more of a certainty. We're due one fairly soon. However in the scale of these things, "soon" means anywhere from a few decades to a few thousand years.

Don't forget The Day After Tomorrow got 1 thing wrong... it would actually take at least 50 years. Basically every case of ancient, well preserved animals were freak, local (usually with a few metres) events. If that wasn't the case, we wouldn't be able to move for them all.

(2012-09-12 15:11)Bez Wrote:  What makes you think that we are all so special that it wont happen again? There is still that chance that one day we might be wiped off the face of the earth.
There's a good chance that there will be another major, globally catastrophic event again (although we only really know of 1 or 2 during the time of advanced life). The chances of one happening while there's an intelligent ape that calls itself a human wandering around is pretty damn small that it fades into insignificance (short of thermonuclear war or something else man-made). Humans won't exist as we know it in a few thousand years.
Chances are we (as a species) would survive your standard ice age (not even counting the 'mini' ice ages), albeit probably with a pretty hefty drop in global population - we're diverse and adaptable enough to survive it and with tech it might not even be too much of a hardship. A major global ice age (rare) would likely cause a problem though.

Looking on the bright side, if we've not said "so long, sucker" to this rock in the next 3 billion years or so, we'll get irradiated by the sun anyway.

I know what you mean, but I doubt even their members buy into the Mayan Calendar bull.

Quote:Hello LFS Racers,

A lot of you already know, but many don't, because the information is buried deep inside a thread about a hacker.

In the next few days we'll be able to release a test patch with multiplayer improvements. It's not one that uses the new tyre physics which is still being developed, and does not contain any new content. I had to start working on this because hackers found a way to join a host as an administrator using a false user name, such as a single space. They could then use various cheats and could not be kicked or banned from the host. A dedicated host update 0.6B4 solved this particular problem but one of the hackers demonstrated that he was still able to cause a host to crash. Luckily, this time I was able to work out the probable cause and implement a fix. Just before that, I was already trying out a test of a new way for the multiplayer system to work - instead of waiting for messages from all guests, the system now only waits for messages from the host. So if there is one laggy connection, or someone lags temporarily, it won't have a negative effect on other people (other than seeing a lagging car).

Main improvements due to the new system :

Physics and all replays are still compatible
Game only needs host packets to continue processing
Quicker joining to host - no waiting for other players
No waiting for packets from players with slow connections
Much longer timeouts - lower probability of disconnection

Also there are fixes for various bugs and security issues that have been reported, and some more improvements that I can do because of the new multiplayer system.

I had hoped to release a test patch today but some of the bug fixes took half a day and some of the consequences of the new system are leading to various improvement possibilities and code simplifications which are hard to resist. So I expect a few more days on the case then release a patch for public testing.

Great that you can now shift+p/s in a race instantly when someone's either lagging or connecting.
