Extra FPS - Chuck - 2014-01-22 11:45

Note: This only works on Windows 7 or Vista.

I just noticed how much video performance the desktop composition in Windows actually uses, and was quite impressed.
I did a little test on my office PC and the FPS increased from 38 to 50. Might not be interesting on gaming PCs but I believe there are quite a few who would appreciate some extra fps.

You can either use the Windows dialogue to disable it for the game:
(right click on the icon - >properties)

Or, you can disable/enable it while the game is running to benchmark.

Switch to desktop, open a command prompt (Windows key + r) and enter:
net stop uxsms

To re-enable enter (otherwise it will last until next reboot):
net start uxsms

Quote:The desktop composition visual experience feature, introduced since Vista, fundamentally changed the way applications display pixels on the screen. When desktop composition is enabled, individual windows no longer draw directly to the screen or primary display device as they did in previous versions of Windows. Instead, their drawing is redirected to off-screen surfaces in video memory, which are then rendered into a desktop image and presented on the display.

Thanks a lot Chuck, now I can drive on SOX with shadows.
Without: 26 fps (low settings everywhere)
With: 38 fps (high settings except fullscene AA)

I couldn't live if I'd get 38 fps..

RE: Extra FPS - Toni - 2014-01-22 14:31

If you have money for two screens, why wouldn't you buy a new computer?

RE: Extra FPS - Toni - 2014-01-22 14:39

cause i got new pc a month ago that is just good enough for me, i dont need a uber pc to play games on high graphics for example i just wanted a pc that runs them smooth enough to play

Ah, that sounds reasonable. Smile

RE: Extra FPS - Toni - 2014-01-22 14:51

Well. Got used to constant 14 FPS on my first PC when i was driving in demo so that might be the reason why i can live with low FPS, even tho my dads pc that i used from september to december had constant 100-500 fps

End of my OT on OT area in this thread

RE: Extra FPS - Ras - 2014-01-22 15:01

This seems to only give me an extra few FPS. I guess my PC can be classified as gaming PC Tongue

RE: Extra FPS - Roba - 2014-01-22 16:08

I didn't even notice the difference... I run around 60-100 FPS on multiplayer.

RE: Extra FPS - Sebas - 2014-01-22 16:21

Made me move from 21FPS to 30iish on Kyoto.
Nice find.

RE: Extra FPS - Makee - 2014-01-22 17:41

I have windows xp, where is it?

RE: Extra FPS - Chuck - 2014-01-22 17:44

Win XP has the "turbo" built-in lol

RE: Extra FPS - Johan. - 2014-01-22 18:57

Oh this is neat. Don't need the extra FPS on most of the tracks, just on Sydney. Many thanks Chuck!

RE: Extra FPS - Paul - 2014-01-22 21:48

Nice found chuck !
