Thought I'd share this.

You're probably familiar with the cone shaped clouds that form when a jet fighter breaks the sound barrier - now watch what you get when an Atlas rocket travels through the clouds at supersonic speed. Fascinating IMO.

RE: Sky Ripples. - mastahx - 2012-04-14 09:39

How is it possible? Can anyoenj explain it?

RE: Sky Ripples. - McGherkin - 2012-04-14 10:10

I'll try.

When travelling faster than the speed of sound, the rocket makes a shockwave as it hits the air in front of it - this shockwave is also where the sonic boom comes from.

The shockwaves spread out in a cone shape behind the rocket. When you see the clouds ripple, it's this cone shape of shockwaves passing through them.

Ooh, Ok.. How fast is sound? ;p

To break the sound-barrier.. 1000km/h. Mach1.

*Cough* Thats whats told me. Looked it up, and it seems to be 'a bit' faster:

Quote:The speed of sound is the distance travelled during a unit of time by a sound wave propagating through an elastic medium. In dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), the speed of sound is 343.2 metres per second (1,126 ft/s). This is 1,236 kilometres per hour (768 mph), or about one kilometer in three seconds or approximately one mile in five seconds.
