The mental rental adventure - Special - 2012-06-17 18:35 Well, you know they say nothing handles like a rental... A nice early start from East Midlands airport courtesy of Ryanair had us in the alps by midday. Now time to collect the car.... Having pre-booked, we werent able to be told exactly what the car was. Driving licences checked, many forms signed, including all the extra insurance options so we didnt have to pay a fortune were something to go wrong, we were handed the keys to a "Lancia Musa". Nope we didnt have a clue what that was either, but it sounded shit. A little bit of flirting with the cute italian girl and 20 euros later, soon had us upgraded to something a bit better. Yup, we were handed the keys to an Alfa. we had 48 hours with the car, and a flight back shortly afterwards. Not alot of time to squeeze in over 500 miles of driving through Italy and Switzerland. That afternoon we made a dash to near the Swiss border where we stayed the night in the first hotel. A couple of interesting roads were driven on the way there, including the Mortirolo Pass. The next day we drove through North Italy into Switzerland. Stopping in St Moritz along the way. Some lovely roads through Switzerland However, we needed to press on towards Davos to get to the Stelvio Pass. The video of me driving up, the main twisty bit is around the 10 min mark: This was the view from the top of the Stelvio Pass. Catching its breath at the top: This was the view down the other side: We heard this coming up from the bottom about 10 mins before it finally arrived at the top And finally, down the bottom of the other side, the road down visible in the background. A quick dash down the Autostrada and then down alongside Lake Garda My favourite shot of the awesome Alfa Sadly all good things come to an end, the hire car was returned undamaged, and it was byebye heat and hello rain again. RE: The mental rental adventure - Tubby - 2012-06-17 18:43 Looks Awesome Adam. But its a shame you didnt get the Musa. RE: The mental rental adventure - McGherkin - 2012-06-17 18:53 Lol at the Irish sat nav Saw some of the pics on FB, looks like an epic trip. How much was the flight? RE: The mental rental adventure - Special - 2012-06-17 18:54 About £50 return. Hire car was the expensive thing at about £140 each for 48 hours, although we both paid extra cos we were under 25. Whole thing cost less than £300 each. RE: The mental rental adventure - Nick - 2012-06-17 18:55 Looked bloody awesome, hope you had a good time. I also hate you. RE: The mental rental adventure - McGherkin - 2012-06-17 18:55 That's cheaper than the bloody Nurburgring! RE: The mental rental adventure - ZsoLT - 2012-06-17 21:04 I had nearly the same tour in 2009. Awesome roads, really liked the Stelvio Pass. That was absolutely fantastic place. One day we went around the Lake in a coach and Sirmione was also nice. Others i didnt have so much time to get to see whats in there. But Riva del Garda was epic and I'd definetly like to go back there Good for you |
