Optical drive -> SSD [Solved]
Me...again
I'll keep it short and sweet this time. I've got my SSD, and was just thinking, because I dont use my optical drive, remove it and get a kit to fit the SSD in there, and run the new SSD with the HD. So, just wondering if anyone has experience doing this with any laptop, and i'm particularly interested in whether or not there would be heat/cooling issues as there wouldn't be an air vent anywhere half close to it. Or power issues, battery life isnt a problem, but just getting enough power to run. HP Pavilion DV6 6C20TX Thanks in advance, again. /Chris |

RE: Optical drive -> SSD
There shouldn't be any heat/power issues. A DVD being spun to >10000RPM plus laser will always generate more heat and use more power than an SSD.
As for the kit itself, I've never seen one, so can't help you there. |

RE: Optical drive -> SSD
Lost me at laptop.
Get a desktop, most of your heat concerns will flutter away in the breeze. |

RE: Optical drive -> SSD
Better to bump this, than make a new thread I guess.
I've replaced the Optical Drive with the SSD using the kit shown above. The laptop has booted fine, but once in My Computer it's recognised as Local Disk (Q: ). I can do nothing with the drive. When double-clicking, I get "Location is not available" "Q:/ is not accessible. Access is denied." To my knowledge, it needs formatting, and of course Firmware update etc, but when i right-click, Format, I get another error message, saying "You do not have sufficient rights to perform this operation". The drive is not shared, and i can not "take ownership of the drive", despite being logged in as admin with administrative privileges. I've tried googling briefly, with no success. Anyone here know anything to help? Thanks in advance |

RE: Optical drive -> SSD
Right click my computer, go into the disk manager. Google and fiddle how to format the drive to use the way you want.

RE: Optical drive -> SSD
Thanks Nitros, got that sorted, much appreciated.
1 last question now, for me to take advantage of the higher speeds, do i have to re-install the games onto the SSD, or just copy files onto it from the HD? |

RE: Optical drive -> SSD
Just copying them over should suffice, make sure you update all your shortcuts with the new links though, they will still try and locate the .exe from it's original C: location.

RE: Optical drive -> SSD
Still not the best way though. All uninstall-routines will definitely break, some games may not start at all, and others may have problems when installing updates / patches, as there are usually many references in the Windows-Registry pointing to the old location.
So, if you want to go the safe way, you'd need to re-install them. |
