Switzerland Legalizes Growing Cannabis At Home

In order to combat the increasing illegal sales of cannabis in Switzerland, four of the seven Swiss cantons (similar to states in the U.S.) will be allowing individuals to grow four cannabis plants at their home, starting in January 2012. The cannabis is only authorized for personal use and cannot be sold.

The cantons involved are Geneva, Neuchatel, Vaud (Lausanne) and Fribourg, according to this article (in French, see translation here). People can apply for permits to grow more than four plants.

We here at The 420 Times fully expect this new law to reduce crime and police expenses in Switzerland, and everywhere else this kind of progressive thinking comes to pass.

If four plants sounds a bit restrictive, remember two things: first, it’s still illegal to do this in most of the world (thanks to U.S. government intervention in everyone else’s business) and second, a properly done grow can yield some pretty spectacular results:

I'm against drugs in general, but for the legalization of it for this reason. If you let people sell it at home, or even sell it in shops with age limits similar to alcohol and tobacco, and no smoking in public enclosed places kinda thing, then not only are the government going to make absolutely shedloads of cash by taxing it to hell and back, but huge organised crime rings will fall out of the sky because of the loss of income, police can do worthwhile things and spend time researching serious crimes instead of just busting heads and arresting people because it's quicker.

I'm not saying they stop making sure drugs aren't being sold illegaly all together, but if you take the power away from the huge organised crime gangs that are bringing it into the country and making millions from it, then thats a large part of the problem solved.

I don't think it will stop the big crime gangs as they usually sell more than just cannabis =)

But now people won't buy cannabis from the dealers and get introduced to the harder stuff. The dealers often offer you some other drugs for free when you go to them, so that they can get you hooked on them and make you buy more.

I know cannabis isn't as addictive as smoking, but then I don't think that should be legal either. I know this might help to make it less dangerous for users, but at the same time it'll encourage more users, so I'm pretty undecided as to whether this is a good thing. We'll have to see what happens in the coming months to work that out.

It is addictive, mentally. It just doesn't cause physical addiction like nicotine or most other drugs.

The strength of the mental addiction varies greatly between individuals so some may not really even notice it, and have no trouble with stopping the use of it, while some might always need to get that relaxed feeling no matter what.

Should probably also make a note of the fact that it could potentially trigger a latent schizophrenia if one has the tendency for that.

I don't care about drugs in general(except alcohol) although i have smoked weed about 3 times in my life so far, but for me it is about having the freedom to choose. If i don't endanger anybody but myself, i am capable of making that decision myself.

Also not like the law prevented me from getting high. It's just pretty much pointless.

This is great news though. It's only going to take one country. I bet there will be 5 or 10 more that loosen up their cannabis laws in the next few years, thank you, Switzerland.
