The recommendations are all for cheap crap firestarter PSUs that can't sustain their rated output.

Find out the power requirements for all the parts (including fans, HDDs and possible future upgrades), add 20-30% and that's how much you need on 12V of a good quality PSU. If it's a cheap crappy one, double that figure and cross your fingers it doesn't burn your house down.

The wattage figure is often misleading - I have a 600W PSU that has more 12V output on a single rail (it has four of them) than the total 12V on a fairly cheap "650W" PSU I have. You also have to take into account the efficiency rating when dealing with the wattage figure.
Use the actual output specs, it's a much more helpful gauge.


To give you an idea, the two most power hungry components are the CPU and GPU.
