You're missing the point. He's not visiting a site that contains ads, he's having a local malware installed, that locally injects ads to sites he's browsing.
That also means that this (and similar "addons") can read and manipulate everything he's seeing the the browser. Including passwords, banking websites etc.
I can only warn of those things. Never install any addon you don't know its trustworthy.

How can people still manage to have such issues on a computer today Stop installing crap on your computer Jimmy.
