Traffic Lights - often ignored

Although I'm not in favour of automatic fines for jumping the lights, it would be good if something is done to enforce the lights system more so than it currently is.

The thing I've noticed with the traffic lights is it draws people into a false sense of security. This is because instead of checking for other cars, they're just assuming green means it is definitely safe (which some may argue is a reasonable assumption). However, this obviously isn't true when you have a whole group of users who ignore the lights system.

Hence, crashes occur because people are less willing to actually check if it's safe, because they're instead replacing this judgement entirely for a green light, assuming everybody else will follow the light system. Without the lights, people were forced to check for other cars or risked not doing so at their own peril.
