The thing with DirectX (and a lot of other similar runtimes) is that a lot the builds are not fully backwards compatible. Because in this day and age where hardware is powerful and memory is cheap, it's easier to just have multiple builds installed simultaneously than keep track of everything working on the newest iteration.
 Windows 10 actually comes with DirectX 12. |
