RC Stuff: What do you guys think of this idea?
Been really interested in old RC cars lately, especially Tyco vehicles. I've also been thinking "Why can't i update the electronics and motors in these old cars, and make them run like they would today?"
I have a 1987 Tamiya Hornet buggy that's had an upgrade from MSC to ESC before i bought it, but the car itself is all original. Judging by the electronic upgrade, it could theoretically run 2S Lipo as-is, and could easily be converted to brushless and 3S Lipo with some cash thrown at it. The car was made to run at about 15mph, but it could go 20 + with lipo, and probably up to 35-40 with brushless. I wouldn't mind having a 1987 buggy that raised some serious eyebrows at the track. Hell, i have had a crowd around it more than once already just because of it's age. It's hilarious to see guys leaving their 1800 dollar brushless racing buggies on the tables to come look at the ancient Tamiya Hornet. I also just bought a 1994 Tyco Mini Typhoon I (wish it was the 2) hovercraft in great condition, but the electronics seem to have failed due to age. I'll be getting a busted buggy within a few days, and i'm going to see if it's possible to do an electronics swap, and make the control scheme work. (I'll need the steering servo from the buggy run a few creative switches, but it can work.) It's entirely possible i'll have a 2S2P Hovercraft with a 2S1P setup for driving the lift motor independently, all operating with a 2.4GHz controller. If the hovercraft could be converted to brushless, it'd be fan-shatteringly fast. I also want to buy a Tyco Fast Traxx, and a Bandit. (Both of those are from the late 80's/Early 90's.) I'd love to convert a Bandit to brushless, but id be happy with just an upgraded receiver setup. I have at my mom's house an old Tyco Rebound (car/truck with oversized tires that can drive inverted), as well as a BuddyL Rattler, a 10-wheel-drive monster centepede truck. These two would be friggin' AWESOME with updated hardware inside. Has anyone ever done this with their own RCs? Would you buy an old-school truck converted/upgraded if the price was reasonable? |
