You were right, you didn't have to let him pass, you were driving within the speedlimits and a usual line in my opinion. He was dangerously overtaking, I personally wouldn't have fined him for causing an accident, but for dangerous driving. But technically he also caused a (small) accident.
No reason at all for him to insult you by calling you "idiot". I will give him a warning as a reminder about Rule 1.1.
