From my experience bycicle lightning gets stolen because they find it funny to do or just for the sake of being a 'hooligan' or similar. I don't even think you can earn any money by stealing them because they are a few euro's tops in quite a few stores.

How do thiefs know they don't work after being stolen? I can imagine they cba if they know it won't work, but I doubt they are informed properly about it. And even if they do test the lighting before running off with it, they'd probably throw it in the bushes rather than putting it back on the bike properly
