At least the storm around here where i am seem to have calmed down a bit now. I think the worst here is over. Now it's eastern DK that's getting hit.

I am going to edit the name of this thread and its going to become "Autumn Storms/Severe Weather Discussion"

This time of year -

The Atlantic is now roaring into life and the latest weather models now show another potent storm system pushing in next weekend. As with any of the forecasting here on i need to put a bit of perspective on this as the event is still nearly a week away, but after a day or two of quieter weather across the British Isles we will see a return to very unsettled Autumnal weather as the month draws to a close.

We are now reaching a period of the year where airmass contrasts are at their most extreme. This in turn means there is more energy available for systems to power their way in from the West. At present there is a small risk of substantial rainfall across Southern England at the end of the week, followed by severe gales across much of the country over next weekend.

Data readings on this storm

It's sub-970mb, with a secondary at 144 hours.
ECM has the low at 975mb at present

This one is likely to track further north and potential to be more powerful then last night/today's storm. However still early days, looking at the 12Z GFS, UKMO and GEM there is fairly good agreement on a low entering the North Atlantic in a few days time, but low confidence in terms of track and intensity after that point. The Fax charts ran with it from T+120 hours but what about actual weather models?..too early yet.

Windstorms often come along in clusters aswell.

People at danish weather forum has started discussing the possibility of new storm to us Monday.

Its far to early to tell the track of this system ras..Still awaiting new models/data to come through..the next 24hrs will give light on this storm.

I'm not trying to steal you guys' thunder or anything, but isn't the news overdramatizing the events? I mean, the winds aren't even that strong - Not calling it a light breeze though. We have storms like this and stronger (seriously, we've broken several anemometers) every year in the Faroe Islands, so we're fairly used to preparing for them. If you leave scaffolding, trampolines and loose shit in general lying around, it will go flying and cause damage. That is why everyone makes sure that everything is packed away or tied down. Especially at construction sites etc.

I definitely wouldnt say so. It is a VERY strong when it reaches hurricane speeds which ours did. Its not just trampolins and bricks, etc. that's flying around at this point. Roofs and whole parts of houses getting dragged away. Huge trees falling and tall waves flooding harbors, etc. Generally causing it to be life dangering being outside. People who ignored police warmings ended up getting killed or seriously injured.

For once I'm going to agree here. I mean yes it was semi bad in certain area's of the UK but "damm" the media makes a big big big fuss over it. All day on the news, interviews with people that "i couldn't get to the shop" or "my plant pot blew over" talk about over the top. Seen the pictures on the net already or papers of cars being smashed or houses, that's going to happen when a storm hits but making out it was as worst as the 1987 hurricane that hit England... well sorry it wasn't. Where i live i was actually in the path of it yet we had some heavy rain for some hrs, abit of wind, hardly anything that destroyed things. It was the south/south east/west that got hit hard. Just wait till we get the smallest bit of snow.. whole country comes to a halt!! Health and safety gone out the window.

I dont understsnd your view on this. People have been killed and injured in multiple countries due to this one storm. Surely its worth covering in the news. I dont know about UK but here we beat the record of the highest wind ever measured and generally there were hurricane winds at multiple locations around the country. Can hardly just call this semi bad... it was majorly bad. The covering in the news probably saved lifes as people otherwise would have gone out and get hit by flying and falling things.

None of us are saying it shouldn't have been covered. We're only saying that it was slightly dramatised (meaning that the news tried to make it out worse than it was), this was at least the case in the UK for a lot of places. As Orange has said.

a year ago today, places like New York got hit by hurricane Sandy, and all the media in the area went all nuts over it, and my mother was prepared for an apocalypse as a result.

My view is based on the fact that yes, even though it's strong winds, most if not all of the damages could've been avoided. Anyone fairly sensible will not go out for a walk during a hurricane. Scaffolding should be dismantled and you should bring in the things that aren't tied down outside. If all of these criteria had been met, I highly doubt the damages would be that extensive.

I live on the Faroe Islands. Right above me, a bit North, is where the warm currents from the southern hemisphere meet with the cold ones from the northern hemisphere. I annually witness the lamps in my house, which is built from steel reinforced 22cm concrete top to bottom, swinging from side to side because of the gusts. I have experienced the entire nations power being out for hours on end during 160+mph winds. I have woken up to have ships being thrown against the cliffs where I live. I have sat in a car that couldn't drive forward due to headwinds so strong, that the tires just spun and the car was blown backwards. I have been running around with outside in complete darkness with a drill and some wood in a desperate effort to hold the windows together, that were being rattled apart. Incase you didn't know, when a window goes, prepare for massive damages. Don't assume that I haven't experienced storms and hurricanes.

Hold on i thought this was a "discussion" thread meaning we could all say what we wanted about storms or current ones. Yes i know IOW did have the highest winds recorded from that storm, we were just pointing out the "media" were over hyping it. You well should know how the British media is towards any sort of weather. As Leon said, if people actually had some sort of common sense towards it then half of what happened could of been avoided. Example, don't go out there when its 80mph winds.... stupid comes to mind there. And towards your reply, i actually just logged on and didn't know you had written pages full of graphs etc, i just went from the last page and replied.
I doubt we will get anything like this in the next month or so, it's the time of year when yes we could be hit but nothing like a "Atlantic hurricane season"
