Blackout for SOPA.
It's not like me to dip my nose into Politics but I think we should be raising awareness on this one.
[TC] is a community that has been around since 2006, our Forums have always been bustling with users who have open minds, often sharing useful information, files and other resources, for many it's where we've joined team's and found friends, and even spend most of our free time. However, we also have users who post links occasionally to materials that may not be necessarily legal. Even things such as YouTube videos featuring copyrighted content being linked to on this forum could be breaking the law, SOPA could result in the [TC] Website being censored by anybody going through a DNS in the United States, or even worse being brought down completely, wiping our face off the Internet. A Quote from Margaret Mead to think about; Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. My suggestion is to 'censor' our banner in the protest of SOPA and PIPA in order to raise recognition of the issue that puts our forum under threat - I'm sure many of us will agree it would be devastating if [TC] was shut down as a result of the new bill. Have a read about SOPA and PIPA; http://wordpress.org/news/2012/01/help-stop-sopa-pipa/ http://americancensorship.org/ http://www.reddit.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page https://www.google.com/landing/takeaction/ https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10100210345757211 http://www.minecraft.net/ If you have concerns about this issue please express them, and if you have any ideas we could do to raise awareness of the issue also. |

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
I agree with you Tommer. We should be using a censored banner for the next week. As an American, I'm appalled at this, and it's complete bullshit.
Hope you guys realize how bad this could effect the future of the internet as we know it.. |

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
This is gonna be the webapocalypse if it goes through. Unfortunately I doubt they'll listen to people who use the internet.
EDIT: If anonymous weren't so busy protesting about capitalism they might have been able to organise something against these... |

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
Oh I see. Damn that is going a bit too far, isn't it?
If it's about the piracy torrent sites then I can see why. |

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
Thing is, while the bill's aimed at torrent sites (which get round being shut down by pointing out that they don't actually host anything, just get links), it can easily be interpreted for pretty much any website. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the US government sites would have content affected by this (photos usually)

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
Or, as is already happening with DMCA, taking down content/websites based on no legitimate copyright claim at all.

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
Copyright nowadays can be breached damn easily. A quote or a small poem on your facebook page can be enough to get you a copyright claim.
It is quite pathetic really. (2012-01-18 21:18)Elmo Wrote: Or, as is already happening with DMCA, taking down content/websites based on no legitimate copyright claim at all. Saw this aswell. |

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
I'd quite happily support the idea of taking the forums/servers down for a day or two in support.

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
I'm not sure about taking the servers down, as they don't really contain copyrighted material, or am I wrong?
Forums are a different issue though, maybe they could be taken down, or preferably Tommer's idea of some awareness to SOPA and PIPA without totally losing service. |

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
We already missed it Lamp, it is the 18th of Jan for blackout day.
Also, there isn't the same reason to as with (for example) wikipedia. The TC forums are there to facilitate proper gameplay on the game-server. You can't ban someone if the rules aren't online. And people still should be able to report users. Anyone who plays in TC is already aware of SOPA and PIPA, there would be little effect this would have except disruption. |

RE: Blackout for SOPA.
Every TC Hi-Vis skin with the Kent livery would be subject to it due to use of the Kent Police Logo (Unless Elmo has legal rights to obtain and distribute that).
