New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
Heyho,
I've been trying for a long-time to buy a new computer, and this time the day has arrived. A friend of mine built me a setup with parts, which I can order at a webshop here so... This is what he chose for me, - Corsair CS750M - Power supply - Solid State SSDNOW 120 GB (intended for OS) - Seagate 1TB HDD - i7 4790K - 4,0 GHz - CPU - 16 GB DDR3 - 1600Mhz Corsair - RAM - ASUS GTX 970 - 4GD5 - GPU - Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl - Case - MSI Z97 Gaming 3 -Motherboard He told me, that with this build I can have a good computer for a long-term, however, he advised me to take the Corsair H100I Hydro water cooling, and i'm not so sure about it? Do you guys, with more experience have a better idea/ solution for the cooling? Any good fan which would suit in this setup? Or any other setup you could suggest? Unfortunately I'm quite inexperienced with custom-gaming computers. Thanks! |

RE: New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
Water cooling isn't needed unless you're overclocking.
My CPU never went above 60 degrees with stock cooling. (Combined with the iGPU) |

RE: New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
I have i7 4790k with Corsair H75 Cooler.
(Idle 20-28 degress) (In summer +3 degress) -Prime95 tested 7min: (100% using cpu) and TDP 148w. Stock 4.0ghz: 42*C - 50*C Degrees. -Prime95 tested 30sec: TDP 220w. GG OC 4.6ghz: 70*C-78*C degress lol. (Extra +0.6ghz just 5sec instant to high temp :/ dont know why.) I did tested on 3DMark "Fire Strike" with OC was stable! But what wrong my cpu temp? :/ i hate OC xD. I like stock is enough. My results link: (Fire Strike) Stock [4.0ghz, gpu 1253mhz,7010mhz, 100%): http://www.3dmark.com/fs/7362425 OC [4.6ghz, gpu 1373mhz, 7180mhz, 105%): http://www.3dmark.com/fs/7362701 HDD pls. Hi
Is there any option other than water cooling you can suggest? Any good fan or something? |

RE: New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is a very popular heatsink. But I've used my stock cooler's for years without issues.

RE: New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
I would suggest an R9 390 due to it not costing much more and it has better performance than a 970. Also the motherboard I would suggest using a Z97 A or Z97 AR from Asus. Great motherboards.

RE: New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
Stock coolers are fine, although they're very loud at times. I'd recommend a Noctua NH-U12S if you want an air cooler and something like a Cooler Master RL-S12V-24PK-R2 if you want a closed loop liquid cooler. The Noctua air cooler will be quieter but the Cooler Master liquid one will be cooler by a few degrees.
As for myself, I have a Corsair H80i and two Noctua NF-F12PWM fans sandwiching the radiator. My PC now virtually silent with my FX-8350 overclocked to 4.5GHz, I can't hear my PC and it never goes above 55°C (under 100% load for about 25 minutes). I'd say get what I have but you can get almost the same for a lot less money. I bought mine about a year ago. As for storage, I would go with something like a Samsung 850Pro SSD for your OS and a few games (256gb), Kingston SSDNow's are decent don't get me wrong, go with what you prefer, the 850 pro's are a bit more expensive, but have better read and write speeds by about 100MB/s Processor and ram looks good however, it's up to you if you want to go with something a little newer like a 6700 (non k if you don't plan on overclocking), a Z170 motherboard and some DDR4, might make the build a little easier to upgrade in the future if need be, also would make it a little more future-proof. Not sure what effect this would have on the cost though. Edit: I thought you were going with a CX750M, not a CS750M. I can't read, they're the same apart from the CS is 80+ Gold and the CX is 80+ Bronze, both are semi-modular. You'll be fine with the CS750M like you planned. GPU looks good, my little brother has a 970 (Gigabyte Windforce) and he has had no problems with it, he also has the same case as you're planning on getting too. Secondary HDD looks alright too. That's my two cents. -Renegade |

My dad has almost the exact same setup (he has 960) and he only has a CS550M which is plenty

Hey, Thanks for the extended suggestions I've checked what you mentioned about the i7 6700, and indeed it may be better since it supports DDR4 ram as you say. And about the price, the i7 6700 is cheaper than the i7 4790K (?). About the motherboard, I've found in the shop I plan to buy it the ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING, socket 1151 , which supports DDR4 RAM? And about RAM , I've found the Corsair 16 GB DDR4-2133 Kit, I assume that would fit? With those changes is it better? Sorry for the questions, I'm a newbie here. |

RE: New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
Just make sure your cooler wont block the Ram ports on your motherboard i had this problem.
The samsung evo SSD's are epic but come with a price tag what PSU you using |

(2016-01-29 09:49)Frozen Wrote: Hey, I would say that is all correct, in my opinion, no need to have a custom cooler unless you are overclocking. You can never go wrong with Asus mobos, again, the Corsair RAM is fairly decent and you will most definitely have more than enough, however, GPU-wise, I think you should wait a little longer for Nvidia's Pascal GPU's or AMD Polaris GPU's. They will run at little power consumption and be quite a bit faster. |

RE: New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
Just quick inputs here. I know im a little late but,
I disagree with "you only need aftermarket cooling if you are going to over clock". I use the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO on my 6600k overclocked, but when I was at stock freq. it dropped my temps a good bit which I think is healthier for any cpu. Plus, that cooler is cheap. I have the asus z170 pro-gaming mb and the cooler over laps my RAM. Any heatsink of the 212's size is going to but its not an issue here since the heatsink sits higher... Just install the ram first. lol |

RE: New computer - Suggestions / Doubt
Indeed. I followed Renegade's suggestion and the cpu will have a Noctua- CPU fan instead of the stock one
