New HDD
Heyya guys,
So, I'm planning on buying a new hard drive, I'm a little unimpressed at this western digital drive lasting only a year before copping out on me, it was the lower use drive of the two aswell since it was the secondary hard drive. On the other hand my high-usage Maxtor drive that has been functioning perfectly well since it shipped with my computer in 2006 has never failed me once and still works like brand new. I'm not one for brand loyalty, and i'm willing to bet that the reliability of the latest Maxtor brand harddrives most likely won't be as good as my current one.. So what I'm looking for is a hard drive I can rely on to continue working for a long period of time, also about a terrabyte, possibly 2 If anyone knows a solid 1/2 TB hard drive that has lasted them at least 2 years or more, let me know |

RE: New HD
I also had a Western Digital, which died after 3 months of usage. I'm currently using Seagate and have no complaints. Just checked my old PC that died on me half a year ago, and it had a Seagate as well, and I had that computer running for 2-3 years, no issues, and the hard drive was not the thing that failed.
So, Seagate gets my vote. |

RE: New HD
Yeah I was considering getting a Seagate. I saw the price too and I was kinda suprised..
http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog...CHIQ8wIwBQ ~£80-90 for a 2TB Hard Drive with a 600 mb/s write speed? I swear a year ago you were lucky to get a 1TB with a 300mb/s for £90 The price alone is tempting for me heh |

My WD HDD died last Friday after 2 years of use. Bought a new Seagate one on Saturday.

RE: New HD
I guess you can't set the brand equal to quality/reliability these days. They all make good products and you can always catch a foul one

RE: New HDD
My 1.5TB WD had an error as well It was probably there from new as it was about 1.3TB in. Got it replaced on warranty though (they sent me a replacement before I had to send them the broken one, so I could back up what I could). That's the only modern (<10 years) HDD I've had that's failed.
Seagate have owned Maxtor for several years now and have recently bought Samsung's HDD company. Nowadays, the best quality ones from the company get branded Seagate. There are still a few models with a 5 year warranty. I have a couple of Seagate/Maxtor drives from '05,'06 that are still going strong. That's the speed of the SATA data link (and should be what the 32/64MB cache can do), not the mechanical hard drive itself. 7200rpm Seagate/Maxtor 1TB drives can sustain more than 130MB/s read/write. Larger capacities are generally even faster (but I haven't seen any faster than 160MB/s) due to the data density of the platters. Good brands: Seagate/Maxtor are basically the same, Samsung F3 and up are good from what I've heard (never had one though). On the whole, I haven't heard much bad about WD, but the others may be marginally better. Don't get an Hitachi. They're nicknamed "Deathstar" for a reason. |
