Someone trying to scam me?

As I'm selling my car, it is on ebay and Piston Heads.

I had an email from a guy yesterday:

"Hi there,is the above listed still for sale and in good condition?Please get back to me with the final asking price..My Email Address: [email protected]"


I just replied saying it is and little bit about the car also and at 3:30am (a bit late I thought) a reply:

"Thanks for the reply to my question about it been for sale,i will want
you to please do explain to me the present state of it and also if you
can get back to me with some pics as well,i will also want to inform
you that i will be making the payment of it via Bank transfer which i
believe is safe and secured and also the Bank charges is on me which i
will also pay for so all i need from you now is for you to get back to
me with your Bank details for me to make the payment once you have
gotten back to me with the details about it and also with the pics as
well, i wont be around to check for myself but i will be having a
mover who will be coming for the pickup as soon as the payment is
cleared.Thanks as i hope to read back from you soonest.

It's broken English so really not sure what to think. Definitely not giving him those details I have replied giving him pictures and more info on car and asked to either pay on collection or paypal so will be awaiting a response.

Are these the usual details you need for bank transfer and is there anything that can go wrong if I give him those details?

Also just to add - I have had someone try scam me before, sent me a fake email pretending to be paypal saying he paid for it but paid me for shipping charges and I should pay him back those charges via western union lol. I'm thinking this might be the same - he sends me some sort of fake confirmation it has been sent?

BIC and I-BAN are needed for foreign-country bank-transfers iirc, but not sure if it's a fake or not

Well, as far as i know, you can post your account number on the side of a city bus if you like, and you'll never have a problem because you need the PIN to get anything OUT of the account. You can, however, put money INTO the account without a PIN. Seriously, you could put $5 into anyone's bank account if you like, lol.

If he asks for anything back, it's a scam. There's no "paying the customer". My GF was watching "Teen Mom" one day, and they were talking about how the chick just got scammed for like 3 grand, because she was selling a car, and didn't question it when the guys asked for 3,000 dollars so that they could pay her 8,000 to cover the 3,000 and the 5,000 car. So, she paid them 3 grand and they were like "peace, b*tches" and stole the money.

It looks like no scam, but you might want to check with your bank, to see what info is required for this transaction, and what isn't. If they start asking for what isn't, decline. For example, if they're doing an account transfer, they may not need your name if they have the account number, since the bank will know that. They certainly need nothing that's secure.

It looks okay, but i don't know what the last 2 items are. If they're security items (like a CCN on the back of a credit card, for example), decline.

Basically, it's just like i tell everyone's moms: If it feels bad, stop.

Tbh, i wouldnt do this. First of all, how he writes. Its either not an englishman or not an adult .
And also, why does he need all of your details? Only your account number is enough to PUT money ON the account.

Thanks for the advice. Still seems a bit dodgy though. If BIC and I-BAN are needed for foreign-country bank-transfers seems a bit dodgy if it someone abroad.

Going to just see if he will pay on pick up or paypal or else I'd prefer be safe and not sell it than sorry.

Yea. And like i said, he only needs your account number to put money on your account. The rest is not needed.

No actually, for a foreign bank transfer you need all those, except your name really. Bank name, account number, BIC, I-BAN are all requirements. Not sure about the name, but iirc it has to match the name linked to your bank account.
I'd ask him to call you over the phone, and as you said, to pay via paypal.

Account number and Sort code is all the person needs, they don't even need your full name.

And tbh if he can do bank transfer why not meet in person?

Also bank transfers are irreversible so why does he want to send the money before he's seen the car? doesn't add up

Seems pretty dodgy to me. One of these e-mails that has nothing unique in them and could be send to multiple people without modifying it.

Your solution seems fine and if it really is a scam, i doubt he will reply back.

i would never give out my bank deatails to a random person.
also i would contact ebay. to see if this is normal...

even if he was a scammer. and he did take money from your account.. you r protected. u would get that money back.

but i still woudn't give him my deatails...


he said he would be sending someone to pick up the car.. if that is the case.. tell him to pay when the guy comes.

Complete scam, sounds like he is from a foreign country and this sort of thing has happened to many people before, usually they have payed via Paypal though.

I wouldn't even accept Paypal Stevo, search on google and you will find that many people have been victims of this.

I had a Nigerian try to scam me before couple months ago via fake payment email acting like it's through paypal. I think you guys are right with it being a scam, appreciate everyones feedback I just want to sell it ffs =[

I would either ask him to pay via Paypal (because then Paypal will help you/refund you if anything goes wrong). Or give him the details of a Barclaycard if you have one. Barclaycard are very very good with things like this, having great fraud protection systems, and guarantees in case something does go wrong.

If all you are giving are the details given in your post, it should be fine - you give those sort of details over if ordering a pizza over the phone etc.

Might be worth speaking to your bank to confirm that though.
