(2012-06-19 17:07)Johan. Wrote: @ Roba, isn't truck driving the same as driving a car? As in, you take driving-lessons, learn how to drive according to the instructor. But, once you've passed the exams and things, your finally starting to learn how to drive the car. If so: how can you finish your school as a proffesional truck-driver.. Wouldn't you be a rookie before you turn prof, just like in football? We're taught everything about trucks, how they work, what do we do when something goes wrong to save the situation, every little thing that nobody would ever even teach on a driving school. And to add, we drive the trucks there about 2 years, 1 and a half year to practice the handling, reversing in corners and with different size and type of trucks, and half a year~ to practice driving around the city, with real traffic everywhere. And with the city, I mean the center of the Finland's Capital, Helsinki. We spend 3 years to prepare to the real deal, including 3 months overall on board practicing with real truck drivers. So yes, if we graduate, we can call ourselves professional drivers. Sure we will still learn about stuff as we go to work, but doesn't mean we know nothing. |

RE: Scania Truck Driving Simulator
@Roba
Every situation can be different in small ways and make it difficult in a big way. When I worked at *Sigh* Poundstrechers we had this back yard for delivery's. One day they put a skip in one place in that yard. The driver came in and couldn't get out for about 3 hours and because we had a steep ramp to get into the yard so he couldn't reverse out. Normally they'd swing the truck around but because of this one skip he was stuck. So he tried detaching all the power cords and break cords from the trailer to swing it that far around the tires of the trailer started squealing. Didn't end well at all, the back of the trailer ended up hitting a column of next doors wall at about 10mph (Carpetright's they were *Removed* anyways..) did hardly any damage but still. This guy had 20 Years logistics under his belt.. |

RE: Scania Truck Driving Simulator
@Bez
Sure it's about the situation, but still, if I drove the licence and took a couple 1 week courses about logistics, would I be as good as practicing for 3 years? I will graduate as one of the 'elite' drivers of my age, of all the people who's just about to get to real work. Sure accidents do happen but the situation you described, how many times has that happened? Not very usual I guess. And with our experience, if our truck brakes down on the road, we could fix it by our own, if we can't, we can at least inform the TOW guy of what's wrong. The guy with couple courses would know nothing about trucks. Nothing. I'm not very good on arguing/discussing about everything in English so excuse me if my answers aren't the best. |

RE: Scania Truck Driving Simulator
@Roba
What we are trying to say is; Doing courses doesn't make anyone a "professional" driver. Yea you completed the course they may give you the tag professional but you don't start learning in-till you start driving properly. As I said different situations still come around everyday. My dads 47 drove for 29 years in a car and he still says he learns something new about driving everyday more or less.. Truth of the matter is you can't be a "professional" driver while on the roads with other people. You cannot predict what everyone is going to do... To be honest its just a tag that people like to put on themselves. |

It's a tag that tells the trucking companies that we know our shit.

RE: Scania Truck Driving Simulator
The word for professional has a slightly different tone in finnish (ammattilainen). It basically just means that you have the necessary education and training to do things in your line of work. So in that light Roba will be a professional truck driver, since he's on the subject in vocational school.
This discussion is getting a bit sidetracked though... Meeting adjourned? |

RE: Scania Truck Driving Simulator
Well I'm studying the same thing as Roba apparently, Logistics to become a driver and I dont really either see the point of 3 years as the 1st year for me was really just sitting around and driving sprinters in the yard. But I finish my study and then I can do driving as my dayjob. Dunno if it makes me more professional but after that I could say that im better with a truck than a doctor or a chef.

Bhah, good for you, I study in Tampere and the city has "no money for the education or healthcare". Appears to be a poor place Apart from the new pointless tunnel which costs 140million euros. |
