Even with an automatic gearbox you can put it to neutral. I'm driving an automatic gearbox car myself and tried it once on a parking lot just to see if it works. Works perfectly fine.

Guess these people are in such a shock that they fail to realise that the brake will always be stronger than the throttle. Very painful to watch such poor reactions to an uncommon situation.

I guess most common is the fact that a foot mat will get the pedal stuck. On turbo fitted cars sometimes the mounting can fail and it will suck oil into the combustion chamber. Even when you turn the engine off and no diesel is reaching the engine anymore, it will still keep burning the oil until the oil is empty and your engine is ruined.

Best case is to put it in a high gear, hold the brake firmly and stall it. In automatic cars you can use co2 into the intake or just cover the intake.

There is one thing I don't get, they clearly know it's accelerating without their input so why do they avoid everything, building up more and more speed before the inevitable horrific crash? As Pipa mentioned, might've just been pure shock and who knows how we'd react in such situations, but still.

Yeah, it's not easy to crash purposely, but I'd say it's much safer to crash on the car ahead of you when your car starts accelerating from less than 20kph, than to overtake and try to dodge everyone, making you crash on a way higher speeds..

It must be that the driver is in shock, they can't really do anything but watch where they will crash.. Must be quite dramatic experience..

as mentioned above, they can do things to evade the crash. Putting the car in neutral for a start, so you don't accelerate into anything. Or like Pipa said, stall the engine. But maybe some people don't think of this in shock.

All they would really need to do is brake heavily, stop the car and and put it in neutral/shut it off. If it won't shut off you have at least a few minutes to save the engine and can properly access the situation beforehand.

Frankly, people should be trained what to do in case this happens.

For manuals, put it in neutral/turn off the car.

For automatics, put it in neutral/turn off the car.

Brakes too

Also in modern cars with electronically controlled pedal inputs, I would think it's possible for the ECU to suddenly glitch and read 0% input as 100% in the sensors.
Sometimes you can get your throttle pedal caught under the carpet in the car, causing "sudden acceleration" if you were flooring it.

As extreme as it sounds, people should be taught how to deal with a situation like this in their driving test, because 90% of people just panic and don't do anything or they do the wrong things which usually make it worse.

i have been in a situation like this before in my dads old mazda 626 turbo diesel and what i did was pull it out of gear and turn the engine off and stand on the brakes!

This happend to me on Highway when i drove 150km/h. First reaction was clean "dont knowing what going on". When i checked mirrors i saw only fog fog then i got it what happening. But there was no way how safely stop car and not causing accident because: a) I didnt know what heppening behind me cuz fog and b) i was not allowed to turn in brakedown line because there was trucks. So all finished with engine destroying causing vacuuming of all oil.
