Why does my internet suck?
As you all know, my internet is worse than my driving. I'm fed up with lasting 15 seconds on the server before losing connection, and I was hoping you guys would be able to help me.
I have no idea what information you will need to help me, so I won't post a bunch of crap - anything you need to know, I should be able to provide. Cheers guys, Nick. |

RE: Why does my internet suck?
Yes but wired isn't really an option at the moment, and wired was still slow, just more stable.

More to the point, have you tried the latency sumthing in the LFS Area, posted by Crille. I use it, and it helps mine sumtimes

RE: Why does my internet suck?
Alright, I think some statistics would be nice to know.
1 - Speedtest on http://www.speedtest.net 2 - Pingtest on http://www.pingtest.net 3 - Information about your internet connection (Download/Upload will be fine) 4 - Wich modem (that thing that is connected to either a telephone-cable (no, not your phone), or a coax-cable) do you have? (There's a sticker on the back of it saying the brand, typenumber, etc) 5 - Any idea how to get into your modem? If so, try to find a 'testing' tool. In my modem its located under Maintenance -> Diagnostics. If you have no clue, go back to 4 and write the brand/type number down. 6 - Have you ever resetted your modem to factory-defaults? If not: do it Wich may also help is: do you have the problem on just your computer, or on everything thats connected to the internet? Edit: Jesus christ (sorry) I'm slow xD |

RE: Why does my internet suck?
I suspect large packetloss from the wirless connection.
I would try to move them closer together or raise the position of the router if possible. Then try different channels as other wlans could interfer. Also check the settings of both devices for power saving checkboxes and uncheck them. Last but not least update the firmware and drivers if possible. |

I should probably make it clear that I'm not a total idiot, so you can use big technical words and I should understand them. If not I'll cry

(2012-06-18 17:42)Nick Wrote: Try Pipa's post about the wireless signal channel, if there are a few more wireless-network closeby, they may get 'in the way' of eachother, wich causes a nice unstable / slow / less available. And, another nice question, did you always have this problem, or did it just start? If it was always there, try to get a new antenna (try to find a 10 - 15dB one, if I'm right, 'stock' antenna's on modems are just 3dB or 5dB, I've got 3 antenna's of 5dB making a +- 50 - 75m range on my router). Oh, and how is the signal-strength on your current location (could explain the packet-loss) As soon as you can acces it, try this: - Put the signal on 40Mhz instead of 20Mhz (faster/stronger signal) - Play a little with the signal-channels, and see wich one turns out best (there's a Android app to see how strong wich network is, not sure how its called). Your network should be the most strongest. If its not, try to put it at a channel wich isn't used (yet) |

RE: Why does my internet suck?
Im pretty sure its the packet loss that's killing you, It should be 0%. Best thing to do is ring talktalk and tell them you have packet loss, then they should tell you some ways to trouble shoot and see if they need to send an engineer out.

TalkTalk - there's your problem.
no real way to fix it sorry to say, other than moving ISP to someone more respected such as Virgin Media, BT or bethere. |

RE: Why does my internet suck?
Well since cable is mostly fine, then the problem should be the wireless connection which is something that he could propably tweak to make it run stable.

RE: Why does my internet suck?
The tests above were just toys, to determine which part on the line is the problematic one, it would take some more specialized tools. For instance this:
Run that as admin. http://www.city-driving.co.uk/downloads/WinMTR.exe Enter (for instance) city-driving.co.uk as host and let it run for a minute or two. Copy the text output and past it on http://pastebin.com/ (should preserve the text-formatting better than posting here) |
