So. After selling the VRS for £20k, I bought an Audi (A4 59 reg, 2.0TDi S-line) for £9k, then the DPF and Cylinder Head went, not worth spending the money to repair it (£3000). Then I got rid of that for £6k. Now I have 2 cars! An 06 Octavia 1.6 FSI Elegance (£2k) for the city commute and an 05 Superb 1.9TDi Elegance (£2.5k) for the long distance runs. On a multi-car discount insurance is only £2.7k a year for both of them, compared to £3000 for the VRS and the same for the A4.
